The Girl, A Recurring Presence

The Girl is a series on the feminine. It follows a single recurring presence across seasons, postures, and interiors, returning to the same subject over more than a decade of practice. Each painting is a variation rather than a portrait. The figure is never quite the same woman twice, and never quite a different one either.

The exhibition opened in February 2013 and gathered work made across several years. The artist described it as a celebration of the feminine in our lives, our love, and our universe, built on the idea that inside every woman is a girl, a being who continues to spark our days and moments with acts of tender care, love, and intuition.

Formally, the series sits at the meeting point of figuration and surrealism. Faces are simplified almost to mask, hands are elongated, and bodies fold into their surroundings. Colour does the emotional work: deep reds against acid greens, ochre against cobalt. The figures are calm but rarely still. Something is always in motion at the edge of the frame, a bird, a flower, a fold of fabric.

The influence of Moroccan visual tradition runs through the series without ever being quoted directly. The patterning, the palette, and the flattening of depth borrow from a decorative vocabulary the artist grew up inside. What he does with it is entirely contemporary.

It is also the most sustained subject in the practice. Where the other three series were made and closed, The Girl has never fully stopped. Paintings have continued to arrive in the years since the exhibition, which is why the works here span such a wide range of periods and palettes.
