Quadruplicity, The Self as More Than One Figure

Quadruplicity is a body of work built on the fourfold. Faces divide, double, and refract. Figures appear as multiples of themselves, staged across large-format oil on canvas. The series asks a question the artist has returned to across his practice: whether the self is ever singular, or whether it has always been several things at once, held in the same frame.

The exhibition marked Yous Sufi's return to showing work in Morocco after seven years away. It gathered around thirty oil paintings on canvas, developed over an extended period in the studio. The Moroccan press described it as a jewel, an abstract emulsion, a perfect quadruplicity.

The formal language of the series sits between figuration and geometry. Shapes that read as limbs also read as architecture. Colour is applied in broad interlocking planes, closer to zellige tilework than to conventional portraiture, but the figures never fully dissolve into abstraction. They hold their ground.

The fourfold structure carries meaning beyond composition. In Sufi thought, the number four recurs across the stations of the spiritual path, the elements, and the directions. Quadruplicity draws on that vocabulary without illustrating it directly. The paintings are not diagrams of doctrine. They are what happens when a painter who grew up inside a symbolic tradition stops trying to explain it and simply paints from it.

This is the most architectural body of work in the collection. Where The Girl and La Fleur are built on curve and bloom, Quadruplicity is built on plane and edge. It is also the series where scale matters most. These are paintings that need distance to resolve.
