Lumiere du Coeur, Light as Subject

Lumiere du Coeur takes light as its subject, painted from the inside out. The series closed a long cycle of learning and opened a new one, gathering paintings made across every studio the artist had worked in up to that point. It began with a Van Gogh-inspired study of sunflowers and expanded from there.

The exhibition ran over two December evenings and marked the first time Yous Sufi opened his studio in Morocco after a long period working in Los Angeles and Canada. It was a return in more than one sense: to the country, to a body of earlier work, and to a subject he had been circling for years.

The title points to the interior source of illumination in Sufi thought, the idea that light originates in the heart rather than falling on it from outside. The paintings pursue this literally. Sources of light in these canvases rarely sit where physics would put them. Colour glows from inside forms rather than being lit by anything external. Shadows are painted as colour rather than absence.

The Van Gogh reference is not a stylistic imitation but an acknowledged starting point. Where Van Gogh painted sunflowers as an act of observation under southern light, this series treats them as vessels for something that shines from within. The formal debt is visible. The intention is different.

The works span several periods and studios, making this the most stylistically varied series in the collection. That variety is the point. It documents a decade of learning gathered into a single room, including canvases that predate the artist's mature style and show the practice still being assembled.

For collectors, this makes Lumiere du Coeur the most historically interesting series on the site. It is where the trajectory is visible.

Every painting is an original oil on canvas, one of a kind, signed on the front, and shipped with a signed Certificate of Authenticity. Works above 5,000 dollars are available by enquiry with a personal reply within 48 hours.
